Kent Senior cricketers contribute towards England victories

Seniors cricket in the UK is basking in the success of both the England 60+ & 70+ teams on their overseas tours during February, with Kent players instrumental to the success on both tours.

Kent Spitfires’ T20 opener is against Gloucestershire at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in Canterbury on Wednesday 24 May 2023 – entry to all scheduled T20 home matches is included in Kent Cricket Memberships, on sale now.

England’s 60+ team competed in the Carib Cup in Barbados against five other International teams & despite losing in the round robin phase to Australia, they then comprehensively defeated the Aussies in the final by 70 runs.

The Kent trio of Jim Phillips (Upchurch); John Butterworth (Whitstable) & Rupert Staple (Old Colfeians) proved the mainstay of the England attack on the tour with Phillips & Butterworth top wicket takers for the team with 10 each & both taking 3 wickets in the final.

England’s 70+ team have also just returned from 4 weeks in Australia  with the ‘Silver’ Ashes safely stowed in their luggage.

Captained by Blackheath’s Chris Swadkin, England won the 3 match Ashes series 2-1, despite losing the first match.

The second & third matches were won comprehensively – by 102 runs & 8 wickets respectively. Derek Towe of Betteshanger CW was England’s Man of the Series with 175 runs in the 3 Ashes matches & in a 132 run partnership with his skipper  in the final match ensured the Ashes stayed in England’s hands.
