Billings, who has captained England Lions in recent years, said: “It’s an absolute honour to captain my home county. I’ve been at the club since I was eight years old and I’m really looking forward to the challenge against international opposition.

“I’ve not played a lot of red-ball cricket but I want to play more and progress my game so this will be a good test.

“Sam Northeast has done a fantastic job on and off the pitch since taking over from Rob Key.

“It’s good to have options with the bat, ball, in the field, wicketkeeping or with captaincy in case of injuries or international call-ups.”

Championship regulars Daniel Bell-Drummond, Sean Dickson, Will Gidman and Adam Rouse are set to play and there is an opportunity to impress for four specialist seamers and England Lions spinner Adam Riley in a 12-man squad.

Meanwhile, Kent seamer Hugh Bernard has been given permission to negotiate a new contract at another county.

The 20-year-old played one first-class match in 2016 and appeared twice on the pre-season FGS Plant Tour in 2017.

The former England U19 international is out of contract at the end of the 2017 season.
