Kent go into the final day of their LV= County Championship match against Essex at Chelmsford with a lead of 283. The visitors will resume on 150 for five, with five second-innings wickets remaining.

After dismissing Essex for 341, Kent batted positively to extend their advantage to 133 runs.

Earlier in the day, Tom Westley’s 132, which equalled his career best, provided the backbone of the Essex innings after they had begun the day needing to reach 325 to avoid following on.

Westley and ten Doeschate largely ensured that happened, with a stand of 115, while all-rounder Azhar Mahmood was the pick of the Kent attack. He claimed five for 63 in 25.2 overs while Makhaya Ntini and Simon Cook took two wickets each.

Sam Northeast (pictured) then further outlined his undoubted ability. The 20 year-old resumes on 49, one run short of his second half century of the match.
