Match Report: Kent Second XI vs. Hampshire Second XI

Kent’s Second Eleven gained an excellent eight wicket victory in three days, in their championship match against Hampshire Seconds, at Folkestone, due to some fine bowling in both of the visitors innings, and an impressive innings from youngster George Ealham, who just missed out on what would have been a deserved century.

Ealham, son of former Kent player Mark, and whose grandfather Alan, also played for the county, scored an impressive 98 runs, in his sides first innings total of 289, his knock including 14 fours and one six. Batter Harry Finch, who captained the side scored 47. Jack Campbell took 3 for 64 and D Cox 3 for 71 for the visitors.

Then Kent’s young fast bowler, Jas Singh took 4 for 42, and Blackheath club bowler, Arafat Bhuiyan, on his second team debut, 3 for 25, as Hampshire Seconds were bowled out for just 119 in their first innings, and were made to follow on.

Second time around Hampshire made 225, Charlie Gwynn 85, with nine fours, Fletcha Middleton 45, and last man Jack Campbell 44 not out. Singh was again in the wickets, with 3 for 63, and spinned James Logan took 3 for 68.

Requiring 56 to win, Kent Seconds, reached their winning total, 57 for 2 in just 4.2 overs, Kent Academy scholar Harry Turner, who along with Singh, plays for Bexley in the Kent League, scoring 23 runs.

Kent’s Second Eleven’s next championship match is against Gloucestershire Seconds, at Polo Farm, Canterbury, starting on Monday 12 September with a 10:30 start. Admission is free.
