Match Reports: Kent Second XI vs. Jersey

A strong and talented group of cricketers from Jersey, played three T20 friendly fixtures, against Kent’s Second Eleven, over two days, at The County Ground, Beckenham, winning all of the matches, two with close finishes, in what has become an annual visit by the Islanders.

In the first match Jersey won by just three runs, by Duckworth-Lewis Method, after a thunderstorm had interrupted play. The second match saw them gain a more convincing, seven wicket victory, whilst the third game produced a thrilling finish, the visitors winning off the last ball of the match.

In the opening encounter, Jersey scored 142 for 8, in 18.2 overs, when the rain intervened, Jonty Jenner 39, with three sixes and two fours, Jasdev Bassan 3 for 26, George Ealham 2 for 41. Set a revised target of 145 in 18 overs, Kent Seconds fell just short, at 141 for 4, despite 77 from Harry Finch, with eight boundaries, and a six, Julius Sumerauer 2 for 35.

In their convincing second win, Jersey bowled Kent Seconds out for 119, in 18.4 overs, Rhys Palmer, with an impressive spell of 4 for 15, Dan Birrell 2 for 30, Elliott Miles 2 for 25. Harry Finch again top scored for Kent, with 38, Academy student Jaydn Denly 29. The visitors knocked the winning runs off in 12.2 overs, 122 for 3, opener Charlie Brennan 74, with three sixes and ten boundaries.

In the final match, Kent Seconds posted 161 for 9, from their 20 overs, South African Gareth Severin, who plays for Hayes, in the Kent League, made 41, Birrell 3 for 27, Miles 2 for 10, Ben  Ward 2 for 30.

In that thrilling last delivery finish, Jersey reached their target 162 for 7 from 20 overs, opening batter, Harrison Carlyon 78 with two sixes, and 11 fours, getting them off to the perfect start as they paced their chase perfectly. Fred Klaassen 3 for 30, George Linde 2 for 33.

Kent Seconds return to four day Second XI Championship cricket next week, when they entertain Leicestershire Second XI, at Polo Farm, Canterbury, the match gets underway on Monday, June 19. Entry is free.
