Support club charity CRY this weekend

Kent all-rounder Calum Haggett is delighted the club are supporting charity Cardiac Risk in the Young in 2018.

After a routine heart screening as a teenager revealed a life-threatening condition, the 27-year-old is backing the charity’s intiative to increase screenings of young cricketers of the county.

As an England Under-19 player in 2010, he was diagnosed with an aortic root dilation and leaking heart valve – issues that were thankfully corrected by surgery.

The left-handed batsman and right arm seamer said: “CRY is a great charity which saves lives by raising awareness of these hidden issues.

“It takes little more than five minutes to have a scan, but for me, those five minutes saved my life and my career, so I hope supporters will give generously and help fund screening for youngsters across the county.”

Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. Since its formation in 1995, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD).

CRY supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by YSCD. CRY promotes and develops heart screening programmes and funds medical research.
