Take your Flag of Kent to the Oval on Kent Day!

After an emphatic victory by in front of thousands at Canterbury yesterday, the Club is encouraging supporters travelling to South London to Surrey vs. Kent Spitfires at the Kia Oval on Kent Day, Friday 26 May, to take a Flag of Kent with them & proudly display the White Horse inside the ground to support the Spitfires.

Kent Day is celebrated every year on 26 May, to mark the Feast Day of St. Augustine, the first Archbishop of Canterbury & Patron Saint of Kent. The annual ‘Kentish Takeover’ of the Oval usually sees a large amount of travelling Kent supporters, based mostly around Metropolitan Kent but from across the county, make the journey to the capital.

Known as the ‘Oldest Rivalry’ in world cricket, the first recorded completed scorecard of any match between two county sides is from Surrey vs. Kent at the Laleham-Burley Ground near Chertsey in 1773, 250 years ago this year.

Since the inception of T20 cricket in 2003, Kent & Surrey have faced each other on 39 occasions in the shortest format of the count game, with Kent winning 18 & Surrey 20. If Kent win both home & away ties against the now South London-based side during the South Group stage of this year’s Vitality Blast, the two sides’ playing record will be matched.

Kent Spitfires Captain, Sam Billings, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people inside The Spitfire Ground yesterday evening – to get a win for them, and a big win at that, was a great feeling and I can’t thank them enough for their support.

“We all enjoy the away trip to the Oval to face Surrey in the Blast – it always feels like the amount of Kent fans that make the journey match the energy of the home supporters! It’ll be great to see Spitfires fans showing their support for us, especially on Kent Day, with as many flags as possible inside the ground.”
