To Health to give free health checks at Beckenham LV=CC fixture

Sunday 24th May 2015

Bromley Public Health has partnered with To Health to provide community-based free NHS health checks to residents between the ages of 40 – 74 who live in the London Borough of Bromley.

To Health will be at The County Ground, Beckenham for the LV= County Championship match against Surrey in the gazebo near the new function centre.

This partnership is part of a project running until March 2016 to provide an outreach program to sectors of the community deemed to be at most risk of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and kidney disease.

These illnesses currently affect the lives of 4 million people in England and are responsible for a fifth of all hospital admissions. NHS health checks could prevent 1,600 heart attacks and strokes and help save 650 lives each year.

London Borough of Bromley and To Health are really excited about the positive impact these health checks will have within the community – they will educate residents about how to reduce and prevent their personal health risks and live healthier lives.

What is an NHS health check?

The health check takes 25-30 minutes to complete and will consist of:

  • Straightforward questions to residents on their health and diet, exercise habits and family medical history
  • Waist measurements being taken
  • A simple finger-prick blood test for cholesterol and glucose levels
  • A personal assessment, setting out the individual's level of risk and what they can do to reduce this
  • Recommendations of what could be done to reduce risk, including: weight management, smoking cessation and physical activity programs
  • All information is only fed to the clients GP and Bromley NHS so their patient records are up to date
  • Dementia awareness (for over 65s)

You are eligible for a free NHS Health Check if:

  • You are between 40 – 74 years old.
  • You are registered with a Bromley GP or a resident in Bromley
  • You have not had an NHS Health Check within the last 5 years.
  • You have not been diagnosed with or not taking medication for cardiovascular diseases.
