University Challenge – Cricket Varsity at the St Lawrence Ground

Friday 4th May 2012

The University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University’s Men’s and Women’s cricket teams head to the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury next Friday for a varsity face off.

Both teams have been training hard since last year’s inaugural event, with the fierce rivalry between the two universities spurring both teams on.

Supporters both young and old are invited to come and show support for their team on Friday 11th May, with free entry and gates opening at 3pm.

The Women’s T20 match is scheduled to start at around 4pm, with the Men’s match to follow at 7pm under floodlights.

The two universities have a rich sporting history and an intense sporting rivalry; Cricket Varsity will be an epic battle to the end!

Last year honours were shared, with the Unviersity of Kent winning the Women's match, and Canterbury Christ Church University winning the Men's match.

Canterbury Christ Church University’s Cricket Club Captain, Luke Harris commented; “We’re really excited about Cricket Varsity. It’s fantastic for our University teams to play at such a fantastic ground, and we hope that we can inspire more students to get involved.

“Kent Academy Scholar Deanna Cooper is a student at our University and we’ve been inspired by her dedication to the sport as well as the county team.

“Cricket Varsity will be a great night; both teams are fiercely competitive and we’ll be playing to win.”

Graham Holmes, Director of Kent Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation at the University of Kent commented on the event; “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the very best of University Cricket, and involve the local community in the process.

“The University of Kent has a proud and strong tradition in cricket and a long standing relationship with Kent County Cricket Club.

“Last year’s inaugural event was a resounding success and I am sure we can build on this and make this year’s event even better.”

Public bars at the St Lawrence Ground will be open from 3pm, and a range of food options available.

Kent Cricket would like to thank event sponsors Nando's, Oranjeboom and UPP (University Partnership Programme).
