Come and enjoy Kent v Surrey at the St Lawrence Ground

Sunday 23rd August 2009

THERE are several reasons to come and watch Kent play Surrey this week at Canterbury. Kent are chasing success on two fronts. They are currently top of the LV County Championship table and joint top of the NatWest Pro40 League. They have a great chance of winning both competitions and you can help them over the finishing line by adding your vocal encouragement!

In addition, it is also the 300th Anniversary of matches between Kent and Surrey.

Kent“s Honorary Curator, David Robertson, takes up the story…

On 27th June, 1709, a cricket match was played at Dartford Brent between teams representing Kent and Surrey. It is generally recognised as the first ever played between two counties.

The beginning of many historic tussles between neighbouring counties, the hundreds of matches have included many memorable individual and team performances and dramatic finishes, none more so than the match at Blackheath in Kent“s Championship winning season of 1970, which Kent won by 12 runs with an over to spare.

It was against Surrey that Colin Cowdrey recorded his 100th first-class century and it was Surrey“s Tony Lock who, at Blackheath in 1956, took all ten wickets for 54 runs.

The Kent versus Surrey Championship match runs from Friday, 28 of August to Monday, 31 of August.

Before that, the Kent Spitfires play the Surrey Brown Caps in the Pro40. For this game, the Club would like to thank all of our members and supporters and help encourage the next generation of Spitfires support!

With a special Kids for a Quid promotion running for the day, all children under 18* can gain entrance to the St Lawrence Ground for the princely sum of just £1. Please note Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult (over 18).

Not only that, but it will also be a Family Fun Day, with lots of entertainment laid on for our younger supporters.

With a bouncy castle and a face painter, there will be lots to keep the little ones happy. You can also bring your own bat and ball and live out your own Ashes series all around the ground! Ever fancied being a dancer or the next singing superstar? Well, here“s the place to see it all happen. Singer Charlie Francis and the Da Capo Dancers will be with us on the day to help further improve your enjoyment factor.

Kent still have a good chance of winning two trophies this season; the LV County Championship and the NatWest Pro40. With so much to play for, do you really want to miss out and not join us for this ‘cheap as chips“ day? No, we didn“t think so! It“s the perfect opportunity to treat your children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces; even the kid“s next door or down the road. So book now and take advantage of Kids for a Quid and have another great day out with Kent County Cricket Club.
