DBD hits unbeaten 50 and Thomas takes four wickets in Queensland

Kent batsman Daniel Bell-Drummond hit his first half-century of the winter as he cruised to 69 not out in the Queensland First Grade competition.

Playing his second match with Brendan Nash for Northern Suburbs, the opener hit nine boundaries in his 111-ball knock at the Norman Gray Oval in South Brisbane.

South Brisbane won the toss and batted first, making 189 off 49.4 overs with Nash taking a catch to seal the tenth wicket.

In reply, Norths put on 92 for the first wicket with Nicholas Sale (41) before losing Sale and James McPherson in quick succession to leave Bell-Drummond and Haydn Murray (10 not out) at the crease on 122-2 at stumps on day one.

Sam Northeast's Sunshine Coast Scorchers lost the toss and fielded in a low-scoring affair at their John Blanck Oval home.

Visitors Sandgate-Redcliffe were all out for 112 with only three batsmen reaching double figures.

Kent's Ivan Thomas was the pick of the bowlers with a splendid spell of 4-14 off 15 overs, including seven maidens.

In reply, Wade Johnston ripped through the top-order to leave the Scorchers 11-3 and then Maher departed to leave the hosts on 23-4 before the Kent vice-captain began the rebuilding job, scoring a patient 41 off 106 balls.

After adding 58 for the fifth wicket with Mitchell Cook (26), skipper Northeast soon followed Cook back to the pavilion, caught behind by wicketkeeper Sam Underhill.

Scorchers ended the day on 89 for six, requiring another 24 runs to surpass Sandgate's total.

Elsewhere in Queensland, Adam Ball scored 3 forRedland Tigers as they were bowled out for 179 at the University of Queensland, who made 53 for one in reply with Ball taking the catch to dismiss opener Jack Carty

Thw 21-year-old bowled four overs for 15 runs before the close.
