Kent Women pick up first LC win at home to Essex

After an opening day defeat to Surrey, Kent Women trounced Essex by ten wickets to record their first victory of the London Championship at Maidstone.

Scotland international Sarah Bryce recorded her first 50 for The Horses as the hosts’ opening pair of Bryce and 16-year-old Grace Scrivens successfully chased down Essex’s 112 all out in just 17.2 overs of the 50-over-a-side contest.

After winning the toss and elected to bat on a scorching day at The Mote CC in Maidstone, Essex lost opener Beth Dodd early, bowled by Kent skipper Tash Farrant in the sixth delivery of the day.

Eagles wickets fell on a consistent basis, at one point Kent spinner Megan Belt being on a hat-trick, as no Essex batter made more than 28 runs. Kent’s Hannah Jelfs continued her fine form in the fielding continuing from last season, enacting two run-outs.

More reason for Kent to celebrate came in the final over of Essex’s innings, with debutant Darcey Carter taking her first wicket for the county – a caught and bowled effort to dismiss Jasmine Wesley for 15 – ending in a wicket-maiden over.

Essex finished 112 all out after 36.5 overs.

In reply, Grace Scrivens set the tone form the second ball by reaching the boundary for four, and the Kent pairing of Scrivens and Bryce reached Kent’s target of 113 in under 20 overs, helped along by 27 extras concede by Essex’s bowlers.

Bryce’s 51 runs from 39 balls included eight fours and two sixes, and was perfectly foiled at the other end by Scrivens, who’s anchoring 36 runs from 65 balls helped set Kent up for an emphatic victory.
