Vice captain Martin van Jaarsveld (pictured) starred with the bat as Kent recorded a 20-run victory over Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, van Jaarsveld scored a fluent 104 – off just 83 balls – which included eight boundaries and two big sixes as Kent scored 241 for five from their 40 overs.

The star batsman shared in a stand of 79 for the fourth wicket with Geraint Jones (40). Earlier in the innings, skipper Rob Key and Joe Denly put on 45 for the opening wicket.

In pursuit of their victory target of 242, Hampshire got off to a splendid start with Jimmy Adams (74) and Australian Phil Hughes (32) putting on 85 for the opening wicket. At this point the home side were cruising but the introduction of spin bowler Malinga Bandara put the brakes on. The leg-spinner returned figures of 3-25, from his seven overs, and was well supported by the ever improving Matt Coles, who mopped up the tail to finish with 4-45.

Elsewhere defeat for Nottinghamshire means Kent sit just a point behind their east midlands opponents, who are second, and two points behind leaders Warwickshire. Kent are back in CB40 action on Bank Holiday Monday when they play Leicestershire at Grace Road.
