Charlotte Edwards named head coach of Mumbai Indians women

Kent & England legend Charlotte Edwards has been revealed as the first head coach of the Mumbai Indians’ women’s side, after the BCCI announced the first franchises for the Women’s Premier League (WPL), beginning this year.

Edwards, who was inducted into the ICC’s Hall of Fame this past November for her contributions as England Women’s most-capped player, has also coached in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia as well as domestically in England with Hampshire, Southern Vipers & Southern Brave.

The WPL will take place in Mumbai later this year, with five franchises taking part – the initial player auction to purchase players through open bidding & determine the squads for each franchise will take place from 13 February.

Around 1,000 players have entered the auction process. Each franchise will have ₹12 crore (US$1.5 million) to spend & must purchase between 15 and 18 players, seven of whom can be overseas players.

Once the tournament gets underway on 4 March, a team may include a maximum of five overseas players in their Playing XI, one of whom must be from an associate nation.
