Clydesdale Bank Family of the Month Award
Thursday 5th May 2011
Clydesdale Bank and The Wisden Cricketer are searching for the country’s number one cricketing family. Each month, there is £500 cash and £500 worth of Gray-Nicolls equipment up for grabs for the family that’s convinced the judges they are the most deserving.
- Is your family the heartbeat of your local club? Do you make up most of the team and supply most of the teas?
- Is there a family out there who have provided many generations of club captains, coaches, secretaries and chairmen?
- Or does your family go to every county game of the season? Are you the hardiest supporters in the country?
- Are there any other reasons why you think a family deserves this accolade?
Last year’s winners were Christina Gibbons and her son Jordan Peters from Winscombe in Somerset: “I was inspired to enter when I heard Alec Stewart and Alastair Cook talking during a Clydesdale Bank 40 match about their mothers bowling to them in the back garden. That’s just what I did with my cricket-mad son.”
Christina lost her husband two years ago and has immersed herself in the life of her local club as supporter, chauffeuse and committee member: “Winscombe CC has been a lifesaver for both myself and Jordan. Cricket is fantastic for teaching youngsters how every member of a team is important, players and non-players such as groundsmen, scorers, tea-makers.”
Brand ambassador Alec Stewart credits his family for much of his success. “Growing up, Dad had the biggest influence on my cricketing career from a very early age as I followed in his footsteps playing for both Surrey and England. Mum also played her part in driving my brother and I to our school and club games as well as overseeing the countless back garden Test matches!
"It is a great initiative for the bank to recognise families involved in cricket. Families around the country support cricket every weekend, whether it is a father coaching his children’s side, or a mother making cricketing teas, without family involvement, community cricket would not exist in the same way.”
