Denly: I’ve felt in good touch

Joe Denly reflected on a wonderful performance with bat and ball as one of his best days on a cricket pitch as Kent Spitfires defeated Glamorgan at The Spitfire Ground in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The Kent Cricket Academy graduate took 4/56 and scored a club-record 150* in the first of three matches in five days in the 50-over competition.

Kent’s man-of-the-match said: “I thought their 274 was about par, so it was a great effort from our bowlers. We were brilliant in the field, too, it was world-class today, so we can pride ourselves on that. There were a lot of positives.

“Following ducks in our first two games it was nice for me to get off the mark in this competition batting-wise. It was important to contribute. We’d spoken about someone going big and batting through an innings and I was pleased to be able to do that today.

“I’ve not felt out of touch at all. It’s been a tricky start to the season for all batters playing on some difficult wickets but I’m not making excuses, I know I should have scored more runs.

“It was nice to contribute with the ball as well. It was important because we only went in with five bowlers, me included, so it was good to stand up and do a decent job. As my days go on a cricket pitch, this is probably up there with the best.”

The next home One-Day match at The Spitfire Ground is against Somerset on Tuesday 29 May (2pm).

There’s also a double-header at The County Ground, Beckenham against Surrey (Friday 1 June) and Gloucestershire (Sunday 3 June). All matches start at 11am unless stated with gates opening an hour before.
