Edwards and Beaumont defeated as South Africa square T20 series

South Africa levelled the series against England Women with their first T20 international in a rain-reduced match at Newlands.

The hosts won the toss and invited the tourists to bat with both Kent’s representatives, Charlotte Edwards and Tammy Beaumont opening the innings.

Beaumont, Kent’s player of the year for 2015, departed for one off her fifth ball as she edged a Moseline Daniels ball well outside off stump to slip.

Edwards steadied the ship with a brisk 34 off 22 balls but England lost regular wickets with cameos from vice-captain Heather Knight (29 off 20) and Danni Wyatt (17 off 12).

In-form keeper-bat Sarah Taylor top scored again for England, hitting eight fours in a score of 66 off 52 balls before she was run out in the final over.

Showers in Cape Town interrupted the South African reply but not the scoring of opener Dane van Niekerk’s 63 and 47 not out from skipper Mignon du Preez.

Rain cut short the match with the Proteas 16 runs ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis target.

The series decider will take place at Johannesburg on Sunday at 8am GMT with live coverage on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra and Sky Sports 2.
