Geraint Jones (pictured), batting at three, scored his first LV= County Championship century of the season as Kent impressed against Essex, on the opening day at Chelmsford.

The Kent and England gloveman scored 21 boundaries in a well constructed knock of 135, from 177 deliveries, as Kent reached 355 for six on the opening day.

Vice captain Martin van Jaarsveld also impressed and the pair put together a partnership of 137, until Ryan ten Doeschate had him caught by wicketkeeper James Foster for 51.

Jones then shared in another half-century partnership, with 20-year-old Sam Northeast, before he was the next man out.
The talented Northeast continued to impress with a half-century of his own. His knock of 65 contained eight fours and came from 88 deliveries.

The in-form Darren Stevens also hit a half century. He reached stumps undefeated on 57, with an innings that contained seven fours and a towering six.

Essex employed six bowlers, each of them picking up a wicket.
