Hertfordshire skipper Ben Waring won the toss and decided for his team to bowl first. Ben Compton & captain Jack Leaning opened up for The Spitfires and got the team off to a flyer. After the first powerplay (10 overs) Kent Spitfires were 76/0 with Compton & Leaning running very hard to keep the scoreboard ticking along nicely.

Shortly after Compton had reached the nervous nineties, Waring decided to turn to tall left-arm off spinner Andrew Neal who, after bowling consistent pace and line, sensed that Compton would run down the track at him thus darting a quick ball to which Compton missed and was subsequently dismissed for 93.

At the halfway stage of The Spitfires’ innings, the score was 169/1 and Alex Blake had joined the crease batting number three. He was off to a slow start producing just two runs off sixteen deliveries. Blake then accelerated and showcased the power hitting he is capable of with the ball disappearing to all parts of the ground – of note was a lofted shot over cover. However slashing at a wide shorter ball from Alex Gosling, Blake edged behind for 27 off 29 balls.

Leaning brought up his century in the 37th over off just 88 balls. A couple of overs later he tried to slog sweep the ball but instead top edged it straight up for wicketkeeper Benji Cowell to take a comfortable catch off Ben Waring’s bowling – captain dismissed captain.

When Joey Evison joined the crease, he had a solid start and was batting well with in-form batter Harry Finch. Unfortunately for Evison, after dispatching a full toss for six, he looked to continue his aggression but was unsuccessful as he plugged the ball to Jack Plom at long on, Neal picking up his second wicket of the day. Nephew of Joe, Jadyn Denly was off the mark off with his first ball as Kent were 295/4.

Finch and Denly batted sensibly together for a couple of overs before the rain came in the 45th over and the players were forced off the field for over an hour in which the umpires decided to take lunch early. Sadly there was no return of play as the rain continued to fall subsequently forcing the game to be called off.
