Match Report: Kent Second XI vs. Yorkshire Second XI

Kent Second XI ended the season with a draw, in their championship match, against Yorkshire, at Folkestone, the weather intervening after lunch on the final day, with the home side in a strong position to force a victory.

Set 303 to win the visitors were 207 for 7, when rain ended the match.

Posting 296 in their first innings, Kent Seconds then bowled their opponents out for 269, to gain a 27 run lead. There was an excellent innings for the home side from Zain Ul-Hassan, 116, with 18 boundaries, and two sixes, the batter having previously played for Worcestershire Seconds.

The next highest scorer, with 37, was Kent Academy scholar Will Harby. Harry Sullivan 4 for 78, Jack Shutt 3 for 64.

Another Kent Academy prospect, Vish Parakirama took 3 for 59, and James Logan, captaining the side, 3 for 60, in Yorkshire’s reply, James Wharton with 125 for the visitors, including 14 boundaries and two sixes.

Kent declared their second innings on 275 for 8, Jack Nightingale 90, and Logan 68, but the home side needing just three wickets to win the match, with Yorkshire well short of their winning target, were thwarted once again by the weather.

The points Yorkshire Seconds gained from the drawn match saw them crowned Second Eleven champions, winning the title, which was decided on an average points per game basis over the season.
