England turned the formbook on its head by beating much-fancied Sri Lanka in their opening match at the Champions Trophy.

After winning the toss, England skipper Andrew Strauss put their opponents into bat and it proved the right decision as Sri Lanka were quickly reduced to 17-4 on a lively Johannesburg wicket. After that tough start, Sri Lanka would“ve been pleased to score 212. Thilina Kandamby (53) and the impressive Angelo Mathews (52) were the chief run scorers.

The target looked tricky as England were reduced to 19-2 with Strauss (9) and Kent“s Joe Denly (5) both out cheaply. But Eoin Morgan’s (pictured) impressive unbeaten knock of 62, coupled with scores of 46 from Paul Collingwood and 44 from Owais Shah, saw them win by six wickets in exactly 45 overs.

England are back in action on Sunday when they play tournament hosts, South Africa, at Centurion.
