Tredwell called into Test squad

Monday 23rd December 2013

England selectors have announced that Kent off-spinner James Tredwell has been added to the England Test squad following Graeme Swann's retirement from international cricket. Durhamleg-spinner, Scott Borthwick has also been added to the squad.

Borthwick will arrive into Melbourne later today, training with England ahead of the fourth Test and will be available for selection for the Test beginning on Boxing Day. Tredwell will arrive in Melbourne during the fourth Test and will be available for selection for the final Test in Sydney beginning on 3rd January.

Tredwell took 6-181 in his solitary Test match appearance, in Bangladesh three years ago, but has also played in 24 one-day internationals and seven Twenty20 internationals.

Tredwell stepped down from his role as skipper at the end of the 2013 season, with his continuing international commitments being the chief factor. Ahead of his departure for Australia, Tredwell commented; "I've been fortunate to have been involved in a few cricketing trips to Australia and it’s great to be involved again. It’s a huge honour to be selected; it makes me massively proud and I hope to play my part.

"He's (Swann) been a hugely fine performer for our country. Obviously there may be some opportunities for some people, and they may play two spinners. I'm looking forward to being in the right shape to play if needed."
