Kent“s Canterbury Week fixture with Somerset appears set for a draw after the visitors added only 75 runs in Friday“s opening two-hour session to post a lunchtime, second innings score of 213 for four for an overall lead of 221.
Their unbeaten players at lunch were captain Marcus Trescothick with 90 and Craig Kieswetter on 39.
Resuming on their overnight score of 138 for three – an overall advantage in the match of 146 runs – Somerset lost their first innings top-scorer James Hildreth in the third over of the morning.
Having just swept a four through mid-wicket against James Tredwell, the right-hander attempted to repeat the shot next ball only to lose his off stump and give Tredwell his fourth wicket of the innings.
Kent, who were without the services of Simon Cook through a finger injury, used three bowlers in the first hour and bowled tight lines and lengths through Tredwell, Azhar Mahmood and Amjad Khan to restrict the visitors to 39 runs in the opening 60 minutes.
As if to show his disapproval of the situation, Rob Key bowled Kent“s final over of the morning.
