Weekend round-up from Down Under: Northeast, Thomas, Ball and Claydon in action

KENT vice-captain Sam Northeast made 31 on his first start of the Australian season.

The new Sunshine Coast Scorchers skipper batted four as his side were all out for 172 off 64 overs.

In reply, Western Suburbs made 266 and won on first innings.

Batting again, Northeast made 12 not out from 23 balls as the Scorchers added 132 for 2 in 31 overs.

In the second grade game between the same sides, the result was the same.

Kent bowler Ivan Thomas impressed with figures of 5 for 32 off 20 overs for the Scorchers as they lost on first innings with his side making 136 in reply to Wests’ 147.

Thomas was out first ball before taking 1/28 off 12 overs in the second innings.

Elsewhere in Queensland, Adam Ball took the wicket of former Australia spinner Nathan Hauritz before a cameo with the bat

The 21-year-old Kent all-rounder bowled the Northern Suburbs skipper as they made 253/9 batting first, Ball finished with 1 for 45 from 15 overs.

In reply, Ball made 29 not out off 53 balls batting seven as Redlands Tigers passed their total with ease, finishing on 360 for 4 off 74 overs.

Sandwich Town opener Marnus Labuschagne made 22 and Alexander Kemp hit 100 in an unbeaten stand of 77 with Ball.

In New South Wales, Mitchell Claydon’s Newcastle City side were dismissed for 153.

The Kent seamer, batting four, made six with the bat before taking two wickets as University were reduced to 90 for 3.
