Ivan Thomas makes First Grade debut as Northeast hits joint top score

Sunday 2nd November 2014

Kent vice-captain Sam Northeast skippered Sunshine Coast Scorchers with a gritty knock on Saturday at Buderim.

He was joint top-scorer with Nick Selman, scoring 41 as the Scorchers were all out for 176 in the Queensland First Grade clash.

Kent’s Ivan Thomas made his First Grade debut and picked up his club cap before the toss.

Thomas told Sunshine Coast Daily: "It was a great start to the boys and Selly started out really well and we felt like we would go on to quite a big total today.

"There was a bit in the middle where it went bad. If we can pick up a few early poles then we are right in this.

"The pitch is doing a lot out there and it is a hard pitch to bat on.

"The ball is going both ways and popping up as well as staying low, so the batsmen never know what to expect.

"There were balls late in the day that were already moving a lot so I am sure we can use that to our advantage."

Adam Ball did not bat or bowl as his Redlands Tigers dominated with the bat, posting 421/2 in 87 overs at Sandgate-Redcliffe.

The hosts ended the first day on 19/0 after five overs.

Mitch Claydon's Newcastle City side struggled in their District Twenty20 match against Belmont.

Batting first, the Kent seamer, batting at five, was out for one run as his side made 120 all out off 19.2 overs.

In reply, Belmont chased the total with seven wickets and 25 balls to spare.

Claydon, City's captain-coach for the winter, took two wickets for ten runs from his four-over spell.
