Kent Cricket signs the Muslim Athlete Charter

Kent Cricket is extremely pleased to confirm that the organisation has signed the Muslim Athlete Charter, to demonstrate its continued commitment to equality and diversity for all.

With an increase of Muslim players in the profession as well as support from Muslim supporters, Kent Cricket sought to sign the Muslim Athlete Charter to listen, learn & adopt good practice to help our players flourish and our supporters feel valued and welcomed.

The Charter is a commitment and start to recognise Muslim needs in cricket as a whole as well as the Club, and a check list addressing Muslim players’ needs.

This pledge is a part of Kent Cricket’s ongoing work around Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) & an important aspect for us to understand, grow & adopt good practice.

Kent Cricket’s CEO, Simon Storey, said: “As a Club, we are steadfast in providing a welcoming environment to all associated with Kent Cricket.

“By signing the Muslim Athlete Charter, we believe that this is an integral part of our work in providing support to our Muslim players and supporters. By understanding the Muslim faith and cultural needs, we can truly say that we represent our county as well as making all feel valued and appreciated at Kent Cricket.”

Ebadur Rahman, Founder & CEO of Nujum Sports, said: “It is an honour to have Kent Cricket join over 65 professional clubs from five different sports, who have all pledged to support their Muslim players, fans and staff.

“We will be working closely with the county for the upcoming season to make a positive impact in the sport.”

The whole of cricket is delivering a wide-ranging Action Plan to fight discrimination & become more inclusive, including:

  • Increasing the understanding & education of equity, diversity & inclusion (EDI) across all levels of cricket.
  • Reviewing dressing room cultures in professional teams (domestic & international).
  • Removing barriers in talent pathways to aid the progress of people from diverse backgrounds into professional teams.
  • Creating a welcoming environment for all, including tackling abusive crowd behaviour & upgraded education across the whole game.

Kent Cricket has set-up its own EDI Policy & Action Plan to compliment ECB’s actions to improve the EDI landscape across cricket in the county.
