Ball, Claydon and Thomas take wickets in Australia First Grade matches

Kent all-rounder Adam Ball took the key wicket of Zac Keune as his Redlands Tigers claimed a high-scoring win at Sandgate-Redcliffe in the Queensland First Grade competition.

Tigers set the hosts a daunting 348 target last weekend but Keune’s sixth-wicket partnership of 104 with Sam Underhill gave Sandgate hope before Ball bowled Keune for 112.

Ball also took the catch to remove Underhill as Tigers took the last five wickets for 59 on a good batting track to win by 74 runs on first innings.

The 21-year-old from Bexley, who recently signed a new long-term deal with Kent, took 1-81 off 15 overs.

Redlands now sit top of the overall and two-day Queensland Premier Grade tables.

Elsewhere in the Queensland First Grade, Sam Northeast’s Sunshine Coast Scorchers lost at home to Wynnum Manly on Saturday.

The Kent vice-captain’s top-scored with 41 last week in a under-par total of 176.

Kent colleague Ivan Thomas took his first wicket in First Grade cricket on Saturday in the visitors’ reply but could not prevent Manly overtaking the Scorchers’ 176 first-innings score.

Manly reached 198/4 at the close with Thomas finishing with figures of one for 45 off 21 overs.

In New South Wales, Kent seamer Mitch Claydon’s Newcastle City side faced Toronto at their home of Learmonth Park.

Captain Claydon won the toss and chose to field, taking two early wickets to reduce the visitors to 83 for 5 at lunch.

An athletic run out by the skipper made it 203 for 9 on day one of the two-day clash.

City sit 11th of the 12-team Newcastle District First Grade league table with one win after four games.
